MIT students’ agitation worsens, police fire mock bombs to disperse students

IMPHAL, September 22: The protest of the Manipur Institute of Technology students in demand of a change of the institute’s Principal took an ugly turn today with police resorting to use tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse and control the agitating students.

The incident occurred around 3 pm today.

The students have been protesting and picketing at the college gate since some days back demanding for the replacement of the present Principal in charge, who they have charged as being corrupt.

Prior to the use of tear gas shells and mock bombs by the police, the students staged a sit in in front of the institute’s gate this noon preventing the Principal in charge from entering the institute.

In course of time, a police team along with a magistrate arrived at the spot and tried to reason out with the agitating students and make them clear the entrance for the Principal in charge to enter the college. The move only infuriated the students and resulted in a heated argument between the students and police.

Following this, the police fired several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs and forced the students to leave the institute.

Meanwhile, a student protestor complained that on September 19, the Principal in charge had issued a notice without the official seal and order number ordering the students to leave the hostel.

Citing that the exams was conducted from September 19 to September 21, the students asked how they were going to appear their exams if they are asked to vacate their hostels.

A student taking part in the protest said that September 19, the hostel mess has also been closed while the warden and other staff of the ladies hostel have also failed to come to the hostel.

Meanwhile, the All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) today in a press release said that it is concerned over the the manner in which Dr Th Kulachandra Singh, principle in-charge of MIT, Takyetpat is handling issues with regard to students' welfare for the last four to five years.

It said that complaints have been made since 2010 regarding the various problems faced by the students' including scholarship and other issues.

The allegation of collecting a huge amount from the students merits a punitive punishment, it further said.

ATSUM urged to the concerned authority to replace the principle-in-charge with another competent principle at the earliest.
