Legislative Assembly speaker salutes patriots

IMPHAL, August 12: The Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Th Lokeshwar Singh has today conveyed a massage in a press release giving a humble salute to the patriots who martyred their lives in the 1891 Anglo- Manipuri war.
The speaker further said that in the war of 1891, Manipur fighting against the British was a pride moment for the people of Manipur. He added that the forefathers of both the hills and plains sacrificed their lives for the motherland.
It re-counted that after defeating Manipur, the British hung prince Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General on August 13, 1891 at Mapal Kangjeibung otherwise known as Pheidabung. Chirai Thangal, Niranjan Subedar and Pukhrambam Kajao were also hung to death on different dates while many prisoners were sent in exile and kept in prison.
It further said that the spirit of the forefathers of the hill and plain sacrificing their lives for the motherland should not be forgotten by the present generation. The Speaker further said that he felt pride of being the offspring of such heroes. He appealed the public to denounce communal sentiments and at the same time, for an united and peaceful co-existence, it said.
In another separate press release by the International Peace and Social Advancement (IPSA) stated that the Patriots’ Day will be observed at different places of Seijang, Keinou and Moirang in association with the local people of the area so as to give a humble salute to the patriots who sacrificed their lives for motherland in Anglo-Manipur war of 1891, it said.
