Army hand over bailey bridges to Myanmar counterparts

IMPHAL, July 24: Lt Gen AK Sahni, SM VSM General Officer Commanding, Spears Corps symbolically 'handed over' seven bailey bridges to the 18 member Myanmar team led by Maj Gen Soe Lwin, Commander, North West Command during the second day of the three day Indo-Myanmar Regional Border Committee Meet-3 at Leimakhong organized by the Red Shield Division.
Lt Gen AK Sahni addressing the handing over ceremony said, “The Indo-Myanmar Regional Border Committee Meet is a landmark event which will provide an opportunity for representatives of security forces and government officials of both the nations to discuss and resolve crucial issues relating to border management, bi-lateral co-operation and counter terrorism strategy.
He said, “This forum also offers an opportunity to the delegates to exchange views which assist in further strengthening the bonds of co-operation and friendship among the countries”.
The three day meet which will continue till July 25 was also attended by high ranking officials from both the countries.
A native of Senapati, YK Sailas Thangal, the Indian Ambassador in charge to Myanmar also attended the function.
On being asked by media persons on the visa on arrival issue, the Indian Ambassador in charge said the plan was to start it from last November itself, however, due to certain unavoidable circumstances, the time frame had to be extended.
He further expressed his hope that the process will be completed by November this year and hopefully started.
In case the visa on arrival process is initiated and the road condition improves, the Imphal to Yangoon journey will be shortened to 14/15 hours, he said.
Lt Gen AK Sahni alongwith Maj Gen Soe Lwin also flagged off the convoy carrying the components of the bailey bridges to Myanmar.
