AMADA fetes Inspector Ranjit with “Marvel Athouba 2013” award

IMPHAL, June 26: The All Manipur Anti-Drug Association (AMADA) observed the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today at Manipur Press Club under the theme “Make health your new high in life, not drugs.”  

During the observation, Inspector Kangjam Ranjit of Manipur Police Department was honored with “the Marvel Athouba 2013,” an excellence award presented by AMADA.

He was feted for his excellence in performing his duty by detecting large quantities of illegal drugs from various parts of the state.

The function was attended by ex MLA O Joy, Mayai Loishang president M Padamini Leima, Superintendent of Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) Regional Unit Imphal R K Ibungosana and Deputy Director (PH) Medical Directorate Lamphelpat K Komolini Devi as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.

Giving the keynote address, AMADA general secretary Ph Phoni Meitei said since the end of the 20th century people continue to suffer due to the drug abuse habits of their loved ones including heroin addiction, Kani, liquor, other contraband tablets.

Several youths have lost their lives leaving behind many a young woman as widows, while several are suffering from HIV/AIDS due to drug abuse, he said.        

AMADA have conducted many awareness programs, sports development missions and health care missions in aim to make the state a drug free state, he said.

On June 26th every year the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed following the Veinna International Conference against drug abused and illicit trafficking in 1987. The observation started from the year 1988, he said.

AMADA has been observing the day since 2006, he added.

Speaking at the function, ex MLA O Joy said that as the state is facing various kinds of problem and amongst them the three main problems are drug, corruption and law and order situation with drugs being the most important.

Many MLAs, Ministers and other high ranking officials of the state have been found involve in the smuggling cases, he alleged.

While lauding the police personnel who detected huge drug consignments from different parts of the state he also condemned the alleged involvement of some Ministers, MLAs and police personnel in drug smuggling cases in the state.

He also stated that the liquor prevention act is not properly maintained in the state by the concern authority as liquor is found easily in any part of the state. He said there is a need to check the drug smuggling through the National Highways in the state as these highways are becoming one of the main routes for illegal drug transport being a border state, he added.
