Governor's award conferred to L. Shamu Singh


IMPHAL, May 22: The Arts Society Manipur on Tuesday conferred the Governor’s Art Award, 2012 to Langoijam Shamu Singh of Bamon Leikai, Mangjil. The award was handed over to the painter at a function at the Manipur State Art Gallery, Palace Compound.

Speaking at the function Langoijam Shamu Singh, a first class diploma holder of the Imphal Art College in 1963 and a retired selection grade art teacher, Silchar Region, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, New Delhi made the point that people are more interested in joining the field of dance, drama and music rather than study fine arts, sculpting, architecture as they find the latter to be boring. The number of aspiring artists in these fields has been lessening day by day, he said before assuring that being an avid lover of fine arts he will try his level best to promote painting in the society.

Speaking at the function as the chief guest, W Rajen Singh, Director, IPR, Settlement and Land Records said that the economic distribution system has failed considerably in the state as more number of people tend to buy commodities and construct houses beyond their means and requirement.

There is a growing sense of competition amongst the people on the number of vehicles and buildings one owns, however such competitions can never identify the status of the state, and it is only through arts and sports that Manipur can or has shone amongst the best in the world, he said.

Delivering the presidential speech Th Tombi Singh, chairman of the Arts Society Manipur said arts is not an easy field and most people cannot be an artist. People need to appreciate a work of art, he said.
