College students threaten exam boycott unless govt acts up


IMPHAL, May 8: The Co-ordinating Committee of College Students’ Union, Manipur has announced that it will boycott the upcoming graduation semester exams in the state which will start from May 22, unless the state government start responding positively to its demands. Announcing this at a press conference at the committee’s office at Ghanapriya Women’s College, O Premjit Singh the Convenor said the committee has repetitively submitted a charter of demands to the state government concerning the deteriorating condition of higher education in the state, which the government has neglected so far.

He continued as a reminder of its demands, the committee submitted the same charter of demands to the state education Minister, Moirangthem Okendro today.

Elaborating further on the issue, the student spokesperson said, the charter of demands includes immediate measures for uninterrupted provision of adequate facilities for water and electricity supplies in the colleges, renovation of college buildings to accommodate faculties, improvement of toilet facilities for both sexes and appointment of Principals on regular basis to improve both the administrative and academic health of the colleges.

The charter of demand has also demanded an amicable solution to the issue of the part time lecturers of the government colleges immediately. Meanwhile, the spokesperson said the student committee was all set to launch stronger forms of agitation if the government fails to acknowledge the demands of the committee.
