IMPHAL, February 20: The Naga Women’s Union while coming out strongly on the issues of violence against women in the state has appealed the concerned authorities to deliver justice to the innocent victims and the families at the earliest.
A statement of the union said “Violence against Women – such as rape, torture, assault, humiliation, trafficking, kidnapping, killing etc has become a daily occurrence. The situation is aggravating to such an extent that even the minors and disabled are not spared and continue to be targeted”.
Citing several cases of violence against women and girls reported in the state and elsewhere in recent times, the statement expressed outrage over the gruesome acts of violence against women while condemning the incidents of torture, rape and murder that have taken place recently in the strongest of terms.
The statement condemned the act of torture meted out to a 9 year old girl by the mother son duo of Yitala Horam and Jim Horam on 3rd Feb. 2013 at Viewland in Ukhrul District.
“The victim was tortured using hot iron bar and spade apart from thrashing her with sticks and Jim Horam even tried to rape her forcibly”, it said. “During her five days ordeal from February 3 to 7, she was kept confined in the bathroom most of the time”, it maintained.
It has appealed the concerned authorities to deliver justice to the victims and the families at the earliest by arresting and taking stringent actions against the accused according to the law of the land and compensate the victims while pointing out recent cases of violence.
