Referee assaulted, MSL match abandoned

IMPHAL, October 23: In what has become a sort of annual fixture of the Manipur State League, a match had to be abandoned midway after the match referee was assaulted by a supporter of one of the clubs playing today.

The 45th match of the league was being played between Anouba Imagi Mangal, Khabam and Zomi Football Club, CCpur today at the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium.

Trouble started in the 45th minute, when the referee awarded a yellow card to S Johnson of AIM for handling the ball and a subsequent penalty was awarded which was converted by Ngulkhosiam, just before the end of the first half.

As the AIM players were moving towards the dressing room at the end of the first half, they started confronting the referee challenging the decision to award a penalty asserting it was harsh and that Johnson had never handled the ball.

However, just two minutes into the second half a foul from AIM captain N Sangkar invited a yellow card from the referee.

Unhappy with the decision, the AIM captain confronted the referee following which the referee awarded a second yellow card and an automatic red card.

A visibly angered Sangkar assaulted the referee, which only invited more supporters of the club to attack the referee.

During the commotion, another AIM supporter assaulted the referee.

The AIM supporter, who assaulted the only FIFA Assistant Referee from the NE States, Moirangthem Magho, has been identified as Khoirom Loyalakpa, editor of local daily ‘Naharolgi Thoudang’.

Magho was conducting the match, when he was assaulted.

Both teams were vying for a place above the relegation zone and as such the match was important to both.

While, it was a must win for ZFC, a draw could have done the trick for AIM.

Coming back to the

The first goal of the match was scored in just the 3rd minute of play by Th Vandona for AIM, which was soon followed by another in the 21 minute.

K Rocky headed home an assist from Th Vandona in the 21st minute for a 2-0 lead.

In the 35th minute, Ngulkhosiam scored the first for the Churachandpur team.

The equaliser for ZFC came in the 45th minute off a penalty taken by Ngulkhosiam.

Meanwhile, speaking to this IFP reporter, ZFC team coach, S Genlemlal expressed unhappiness over the incident.

He said, his team had to come from Churachandpur and as such has to dole out around Rs 15 thousand per trip.

The match should have been allowed to continue, as there were security personnel to guard, he lamented.

Meanwhile, AIM coach W Khogen Singh also lamented that the referee seem to be inclined towards a certain club.

Today’s development is the second time when a match has to be abandon midway during the 8th Manipur State League, 2013.

Controversies have always courted the state league, with four clubs and two matches of the last edition being reviewed for match fixing.
