PHE minister instructs officials to take action against those responsible for muddy water supply

IMPHAL, October 2: Public Health Engineering Minister I Hemochandra has instructed officials of the PHED to look into the issue of untreated and muddy water being supplied in the state over the past few days and to take necessary action against any official found responsible.
Reacting to certain news reports on the issue, the minister called a press conference at his office conference hall at the New Secretariat and said he was out of station and soon after his return, he convened an emergency meeting with all concerned officials and engineers of the department including the Principal Secretary Ram Muivah and Chief Engineer Ibomcha instructing the officials to find out if the muddy and untreated water was due to negligence or misuse of chemicals like lime, alum or bleaching powder.
He further said he has been looking into the matter in a serious manner and is trying to improve the provision of clean and safe water to the people.
The department is facing the problem of storage of chemicals needed for the treatment of the raw water which is needed nearly double times in the rainy season, which is the present case, he explained.
The manpower of the department is also low, he said.
He also said that the Treatment Plants of the state dates back to 1980 and needs to be modernized to fulfill the need of quantity of water in Imphal he said
He further said that during his recent foreign tour, he had a meeting with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
He further said that the government is planning upgradation of the Imphal Water Supply System upto 45 MLD capacity treatment plant with the raw water being fed from the Thoubal dam to meet the demand for the Imphal city and greater Imphal area, probably with funding from the Centre and JICA.
