Dy CM recognises media role in development of society

LAMKA, September 7: The Manipur Hills Journalist Union, MHJU, a union representing a group of journalists from the hills of Manipur, today, celebrated its 29th anniversary at YMA Hall, Hmuia Veng, Lamka.
The function was attended by state Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam as the chief guest, minister of Health and Family Welfare CADA & GAD T Phungathang as chief host, and chairman Hill Area Committee Dr Chaltonlien Amo as functional president, chairman of MTDC Manga Vaiphei as special guest.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest congratulated the union on its 29 years of existence. The Dy CM spoke about the important role the media plays in the development of the society as a whole.
He said, “No government agency has the power and capacity to spread news as the media.”
He continued and said that India is one country that recognizes the role played by the media which is witnessed by the huge publication of English language newspapers and added “Whether you like it or not the English language is the link language of the world and we must learn it.”
“Thanks to the media the govt and other establishment and even civil society cannot withhold the truth”, the chief guest said.
He further pointed out that a citizen of India is empowered to use the Right To Information Act. He also spoke about the importance of co-operation and understanding between the hills and valley based media houses.
Minister Phungzathang Tonsing speaking on the occasion also pointed out the need and importance for the media/press to publish unbiased and factual report which otherwise hurt people and development.
Today’s function was also attended by top officials of the district.
