CPLBF lauds MEA statement on Indo-Myanmar fencing

IMPHAL, August 29: The Committee on Protection of Land in Border Fencing (CPLBF) Manipur has in a release lauded the statement made by Sayed Akbar-u-ddin at New Delhi on the Indo-Myanmar fencing issue.

The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Sayed Akbar-u-ddin had earlier said that India has asked Myanmar to set up a Joint Border Working Group (JBWG) to address the issue of demarcation of border.

CPLBF said such steps have been taken up by the Ministry of External Affairs in favour of the voice of the people and further maintained that there are a number of Border Pillars on Indo-Myanmar border which are considered as ‘disputed pillars.’

It urged for a re-survey and a fresh demarcation of the border fencing citing the disputed pillars.

Criticising Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who had insisted yesterday that the remarks made by Principal Secretary (Home) Dr J Suesh Babu on August 26 that the Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing was just a security barrier and had nothing to do with the state Government, CPLBF said that there are video and audio recordings of the Principal Secretary’s statement.

Gaikhangam had told reporters after attending the Krishna Janmashtami celebration at ISCKON, Imphal that the statement of Dr Suresh Babu could have been misquoted by the media or might be a mistake. However, he had added that the Government was looking into the matter.

It said the Principal Secretary (Home) had made the statement in the presence of Assam Rifles Brigadier, Commanding Officer, Chandel district Deputy Commissioner, Inspector General of Police (Intelligence), Autonomous District Council, Moreh and Chandel district Superintendent of Police.
