Jiribam Revenue District demand resurfaces after long lull

JIRIBAM, July 24: As part of the movement initiated in demand of revenue district status for Jiribam, a 17 member delegation of the Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) led by its president H Memma Devi has left Jiribam for Imphal today to hold talks with the Chief Minister on the issue.

Speaking to media persons just before leaving the sub-division, JDDC’s co-convenor W Dinesh stated that the trip was organised following a request from local MLA Th Devendra to come to the State capital by last week of July for initiating talks with the Chief Minister in accordance with the MoU which was inked on November 9, 2001.

Further announcing course of action for the movement, he had said that in case the government fail to provide the desired Revenue district status to the sub division with this year during the scheduled talk, the committee will be compelled to restart its suspended stir.

It may be mentioned that several civil society organisations based in Jiribam citing an evident communication gap with other part of the State and lack of developmental works in the area due to the distance with the district headquarter and the sub-division, have been demanding Revenue District status for Jiribam sub-division.

According to the MoU signed on November 9, 2001 at the CM’s Secretariate Office between the Chief Minister and 11 members of JDDC flanked by representatives of AMUCO and UCM, it was decided that before giving full-fledged district status to Jiribam, the administrative offices under the sub-division would be upgraded for smooth functioning and other offices would also be constructed within a time bound.

Even though clauses of giving charges to Addl. SP to SP level, empowering ADC to DC level, upgradation of Jiri College and inclusion of science stream and upgradation of Borobekara High School to secondary level were also included in the MoU, till now the sub-division’s Addl SP has not been given charges to SP level and the ADC is also not empowered to DC level.

Since the government has not paid heed to the demands by taking lightly the official MoU agreement, the committee would continue intense stir until the government grant the status of Revenue District to the sub-division, expressed members of the delegation.
