AMSU observes Emancipation day

IMPHAL, May 28: The All Manipur Students’ Union observed the 24th Students’ Emancipation Day at the Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Moirang today in commemoration of two separate incidents of 1973 and 1979 when three students were killed in police firing.

Family members, supporters and students paid floral tribute to the portraits of the three students during the function today. Speaking on the occasion, AMSU president Thiyam Naresh recounted the incidents which led to the death of the three students.

Three students of the Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School: the first being Haobijam Ibohal who was killed on September 30, 1973 during a procession demanding proper infrastructure of the school and Urikhingbam Khelen and Kumam Sarat killed were killed on May 28, 1979 in police firing during a similar agitation.

He said, AMSU has been observing the day in commemoration of the two incidents and denouncing police brutality on the student community.

He continued that education which is the back-bone of the society is being corrupted by politics today. The students, who are considered the pillars of the society, are hindered by the educational policies and the system which is corrupted by the so called politicians, he said.

AMSU will continue to stand by for the student community of the state and said the body will continue fighting for equal rights of the students of Manipur, he said before suggesting the students to put in extra labor to excel in their studies.
