Minor girl reportedly raped, calls gather on punishment

IMPHAL, March 13: In yet another crime against women and young girls in the state, a 14 year old girl studying in the ninth standard has been reportedly raped on March 3, 2013 at 1 pm.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, the mother of the victim said the incident happened while she was away at Guwahati. After being informed that her daughter tried to commit suicide by drinking phenyl she returned back and asked her daughter the reason.
She alleged that her daughter told her that she was raped by one N Pritam (24) S/o N Priyokumar of Nongmeibung Pung Makhong who used to visit Boynao who is selling fish in a shop owned by her. Pritam came to their house by climbing the wall and asked to open the door saying that he had important news to tell. When the door was opened by one of her brother, Pritam closed the victim’s mouth and she fell unconscious, the mother added.
She then said her daughter approached the accused to marry her as he had raped her, which was refused and she tried to commit suicide on the same day at 9 pm. A complaint has been lodged at Porompat Police Station on March 9, 2013 by the mother with concerned authorities demanding that befitting punishment be given to the culprit.
During the press meet, Soubam Ibetombi, President WACHAK said the girl was brought to JNIMS for treatment by the parents of the accused after Boynao informed about the incident to Pritam. His mother told her not to tell anyone that she was raped and so she was treated only for the phenyl case. However the IO told that there are many others needed to be treated in her body as per the forensic report.
Meanwhile, the police have brought out papers stating that the accused is appearing for matriculation and that he is juvenile and that he is now kept at a juvenile home. However, Kangleipak Women Welfare Association and other women groups have said that they will investigate whether he is a juvenile or not as people who know him said that he must be more than 20 years of age. The accused will be produced in court on March 14, 2013, she added.
