Rivers in spate, water levels reach flash point

IMPHAL, September 14: Due to the rainfall witnessed in the last few days, several municipal areas including Sagolband, Uripok and Keiamthong have remained flooded and the rivers flowing within the city limits have crossed the danger level mark.

Despite the situation, the IFCD personnel at the Control Room remain reluctant to check the water level of the rivers after nightfall due to absence of proper security measures.

According to the recorded rainfall data collected from five sites, the readings at Raj Bhawan this morning was recorded at 17mm, 19mm at Lamphelpat,35 mm at Kangpokpi,34mm at Saikhul and 17 mm at Litan.

Due to the rainfall, the Nambul River crossed its danger mark level at 5 pm today.

The scale recorded was at 781.725mm against the danger mark level of 781.175mm.

The recorded level of other rivers are at 785.60mm for Imphal River,776.275 for Thoubal River,771.800mm for Nambol River,783.100mm for Iril and 779.178mm for Lillong River.

The personnel of the IFCD Control Room located at Khuyathong cannot check the water level at night due to security reasons and lack of proper gear.

It was mentioned by the staff that there is no security provision being provided for the officials and as the inspection at the riverbank may look suspicious to alert security personnel, there is the possibility of mistaken identity at such a high alert time due to planting of bombs at various areas.

Due to unavailability of vehicle, the officials are measuring the level at Minuthong and Lillong.

Earlier, measuring was done at four locations along the Imphal River. The officials complained of the Control room not equipped to the present demands.
