Rain damaged road cuts off border villages from outside world

UKHRUL, August 20: The normal life of Challou and Kuingai border villages in northern Ukhrul district remains cut-off from the rest of the world as the only viable lifeline, an old kaccha road connecting the villages is severely damaged and remains disconnected.

An unprecedented continuous heavy rainfall since the past month during has swept away the main road portion located at the first stream a distance of just 2-3 kilometers away from Chingai village causing much trouble to thousands of village folks in both the villages.

The headman of Challou village, AS Shanrei while talking to this Ukhrul Correspondent over the phone last night said that the daily movement of the village taxi services, other vehicular movements and commuting people are being halted due to the severely damaged stream since from the last week. People of the villages particularly Challou and Kuingai are facing a miserable condition in managing the daily essential needs of life, people cannot transport in the daily needs by foot from Awangkasom junction and Ukhrul as it is a very long distance, the headman said.

He also said that the villagers are compelled to stay in their respective villages as people cannot go out or come in from the villages due to the road communication being cut off for the past many days.

The villages are situated at the extreme northern corners, some 80-85 kilometers away from Ukhrul town.

The headman further lamented a tragic incident that occurred some two days back when a young girl from Somrah village had died in Ukhrul.

Her dead body was brought only up to the place of the damaged road uptill which the vehicles could only reached.

Thereafter, her dead body was carried by the villagers by foot and dropped at Tusom village to reach Somrah village.
