Grand welcome for Eve hockey stars from state

IMPHAL, August 8: The World Cup Bronze winning Indian Junior Women Hockey team's captain Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu (Midfielder) and other teammates of the state Th Pinky Devi (Defender), Lily Chanu Mayengbam (Forward) and N Sanarik Chanu (Goalkeeper) arrived this morning at around 11:30 am at the Tulihal Airport where a large number of people including their family members, local clubs welcomed them with fervor.
Team India Captain Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu born to P Shyamsunder Singh and P Lata Devi of Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai was felicitated by her local club, Thangmeiband Youth Centre at a simple function held at its premise this afternoon.
Thangmeiband A/C MLA Kh Joykishan Singh who was also present at the function while expressing his happiness and encouraging the young girl announced to give Rs 30 thousand to her.
Later, she was also felicitated at Alpha BCI Academy, Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai.
Speaking with this IFP reporter, Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu said she started playing hockey when she was reading in class VIII in 2003 after joining the Posterior Hockey Academy Manipur, Leirikyengbam Leikai.
Her uncle P Robindro noticed her talent for sports after he saw her winning many events in the annual Yaoshang sports, she said.
She further said that noted hockey coach Chandikumar, a friend of her uncle asked her uncle one day if he happened to know boys or girls who were interested in sports. Her uncle took her to the coach who then took her to former hockey player Achom Angena Devi of Sagolband. They admitted her to Posterior Hockey Academy Manipur, Leirikyengbam Leikai and that how she started playing hockey, Sushila said.
Besides playing she also loves shopping and watching movie, she said. Basking in the shower of attention now, Sushila's journey has been one of hardships with her father being a truck driver and her mother running a tea stall at the PWD office.
But Sushila never let her situation come in her path and she went on to be the secretary of Games and Sports when she was reading in class IX at Lilasing Khongnangkhong High School. In 2004, she got the selection for the Inter-School Hockey Women and in 2005, she went for Junior National Hockey tournament at Jabalpur as a substitute player where she did not get to play.
In 2006, she was selected for sub Junior National at Gwalior and trained there for 4 years and it was in 2008 that her team won bronze medal in the Asia Cup for under 21 held at Malaysia and in 2009.
In 2010, Sushila got a job at Central Railways, Mumbai as Junior DC where she is still working.
