Rally against Rape

IMPHAL, July 7: The JAC formed against the alleged rape of a 12 year old by her uncle on July 1 night at Tharoijam supported by the people of Maklam and surrounding areas and other organizations took out a protest rally demanding action against the accused I Bobo, 39 son of Kameshore of Tharoijam Maning leikai a gold smith at Patsoi area.
The accused has so far been arrested and presently in police custody.
The rally which was supported by several organizations including Meira Paibi Welfare Association, Manipur Students’ Federation, Young Development Project started from Maklang Bazar at around 6:40pm and concluded at Patsoi Lamkhai after passing along Longa Koireng, Sangaithel, Kachikhul, Sairem Khul, Laitong, Horang, Luker and Salam.
More than thousands of locals including women, men, children carrying ‘meira’(burning torch) took to the streets shouting slogans against perpetrators of such crimes like rape.
The demonstrators also demanded the government to clarify why he is yet to be produced before the court even though he had been arrested the same day as the crime.
During the course of the rally, brief confrontations between the demonstrators and the police were witnessed.
Meanwhile, it may be mentioned that the 39 year old man had allegedly raped his own 12 year old niece at Tharoijam Maning Leikai under Patsoi police station on July 1.
