Sahitya Parishad fetes artists and writers

IMPHAL, May 12: On the concluding day of its 3 day long 78th annual meeting, Manipur Sahitya Parishad has feted outstanding artists and writers with 'Upadhi' , cash awards and gold medals at Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy here today.
While 16 people were awarded Upadhis in recognition of their work, the Thouranisabi gold medal was presented to Thokchom Ibemubi Devi, and Gambhini Ranjana gold medal to Mairembam Ranjit Singh. Kshetrimayum Ibohal Singh was given the Haobam Iboyaima cash award of Rs 20,000 at the occasion.
The Jamini Sunder Guha gold medal was received by Nepram Maya for her book “Ngangleinaba ithak ipom” while the Asangbam Minaketan Angang Nawa Sahitya cash award of Rs 15,000 was awarded to Sagolshem Indrakumar Singh for his book “Thada thabaton”. The Kaminikumar gold medal was given to Neena Devi for her book “Bonsai” while the Yumnam Lala and Bidhumukhi memorial cash award of Rs 10,000 was received by Yendrembam Randhir Kumar for his book “Maithongda lotliba mamising”.
Speaking on the occasion, O Ibobi Singh the Chief Minister said, "The work of our writers is no less than that of other states. The Government is ready to contribute whatever possible in the field of art and culture."
Putting across the point that suggestions will be looked upon by the government to preserve and protect the store house of literary talent in the state, the CM said that the works of writers and others be kept in record so as to become the guiding light for the youths.
Gaikhangam, the Deputy Chief Minister appreciated Manipur Sahitya Parishad for inviting him at the occasion and said the Parishad is an apex body which has been playing an important role in introducing the state to the world.
Hailing the Parishad for taking up the cause for the advancement of literature irrespective of languages and religions, he said, "The contribution extended the Parishad is so immense and is a source of our pride." Manipur has a unique place in the northeast and the country in terms of its culture, he added.
Prof Elangbam Dinamani, President of the Manipur Sahitya Parishad also spoke on the occasion.
