Rajiv Gandhi remembered on 22nd death anniversary


New Delhi, May 21: The 22nd Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is being observed on Tuesday.

It was on this day in 1991 that Rajiv Gandhi fell to the designs of terrorists.

President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Congress President with leaders from various political parties and eminent dignitaries paid homage to the former Prime minister at his memorial at Vir Bhumi in the national capital.

The Martyrdom of Rajiv Gandhi is also observed as Anti Terrorism Day.

The day is observed to generate awareness among all sections of people, about the danger of terrorism and violence and its ill effect on the people.

The objective behind the observance of Anti-Terrorism Day is to wean away the people from terrorism and violence.

Anti-terrorism pledge is taken in all Government offices, public sector undertakings and other public institutions to mark the day.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has released a TV spot 'Sadbhav-The Idea of India,’ as the nation will observe Anti-Terrorism Day.

After taking office on 31st October, 1984, after his mother, Indira Gandhi’s assassination, he became the youngest Prime Minister of the country at the age of 40.

On the occasion, debates, discussions, symposia, seminars and lectures are held in schools, colleges and universities on violence.

Many NGOs, social and cultural organizations also organize their own programmes to highlight the ill effects of violence and terrorism.

An anti-terrorism or anti-violence pledge is taken in all government offices, public sector undertakings and other public institutions.
