AMCO condemns Kabo Leikai eviction

IMPHAL, May 25: The All Manipur Christian Organisation, AMCO has said in a press release that the organization commiserates with the victims of the eviction of Kabo Leikai.

It said that the act reflects an air of insensitivity, if not arrogance, on the part of the government, and added that it is a gross violation of human rights to render people homeless when the human right to adequate housing is guaranteed in international law.

Serving the notice on May 18 and asking them to shift on May 19 which was Sunday and then evicted their houses on May 20 early morning shows the unsympathetic attitude and religious intolerance of the authority, the statement claimed.

It may be noted this was done despite fervent pleas from the residents to give them a few more days, the president and the executive members of AMCO visited the evicted site, it continued.

It also observed three churches were demolished namely- the Naga River Christian Fellowship, the Gorkha Baptist Church and the Irong Baptist Church. However, a Shiv Mandir (a shrine) in the vicinity remained untouched, it maintained.

AMCO which stands for peaceful coexistence of the people of Manipur feels great concern to see such an act which can disturb peace among the people.

The statement continued that AMCO implore the Chief Minister Okram Ibobi and all concerned to work out a just and amicable solution to the problem.
