Jiri students begin blockade, warn intensification of stir

JIRIBAM, October 20: As announced earlier, the Jiribam units of four student bodies have imposed an indefinite economic blockade along National Highway 37 since yesterday midnight, resulting in several freight trucks which were supposed to leave Jiribam for Imphal being stranded at Leingangpokpi.

Meanwhile, volunteers of the student bodies checked passenger vehicles coming towards Imphal and seized any kinds of commodities found inside the vehicles today.

The volunteers while expressing that such checking will continue further, also urged all to support the steps taken up for the welfare of the student community.

Meanwhile, DESAM local council president K Babuloo said, the movement of the student bodies is for the welfare of the public; and further appealed for support.

He continued that today being the first day, the action of the volunteers wasn’t strong, however, there is every possibility that checking and actions against anyone found going against the blockade imposition thereafter will intensify from tomorrow.

Mention may be made that four student bodies- AMSU–District Committee, MSF–Special Branch, DESAM–Local Council and KSA–Jiribam Unit had jointly announced yesterday the indefinite economic blockade along the highway.

The student bodies had also demanded that the state government’s decision to bring back only five teachers in Jiribam Government Higher Secondary School does not fulfill their long pending demands and that the government should also bring back all 22 teachers transferred from Jiribam at the earliest.

Early this morning blockade volunteers were seen stopping vehicles for checking at Tatbung village at Tousem village in Tamenglong district.

Commodities found during the checking which include betel leaves, bananas and other items to be brought to Imphal were taken down by the volunteers.

Individuals manning passenger services counters should also understand that there is an economic blockade and co-operate, K Babuloo had said.

He further warned all counters/ owners should be held responsible for any incident resulting due to vehicles carrying commodities during the blockade.

The student bodies will continue with the agitations until the demands are met, he continued.

Meanwhile, a late report has said that around 11pm today blockade volunteers had damaged a Tata truck bearing registration no AS 01R 0735 at Leingangpokpi as the truck was trying to sneak along the highway towards Imphal.
