IED splinters hit passing auto driver near Popular High School

IMPHAL, September 13: A powerful Improvised Explosive Device exploded near the campus of Popular High School at Khurai Laishram Leikai on the eastern side of the Imphal Ukhrul road under the Porompat Police Station, injuring an auto rickshaw driver stationed nearby.
The explosive which was planted adjacent to the kitchen of the school on the northern most point of the campus is believed to be remote controlled.
The explosion left a crater two feet deep and four feet wide.
The driver of a diesel autorickshaw which was passing along the site when the IED exploded was also hit by splinters on his left wrist.
He is identified as Ningthoujam Roben (42), son of N Muhindro Singh, Keibi Makha Leikai.
Splinters hit and broke the windshield of another auto rickshaw bearing regd number MN 04 4576 which was parked near the explosion site. The second auto rickshaw belongs to one Chongtham Romio Singh (37), son of Ch Gourababu Singh, Khurai Laishram Leikai.
The rear mud wall of the school kitchen collapsed due to the explosion, while the CI sheets of a nearby waiting shed were also damaged by the explosion.
The explosion also damaged a wall of a grocery shop of one Pangambam (o) Bimola (46), wife of (l) P Ibotombi Singh, Khurai Laishram Leikai.
People who had gathered around the explosion site expressed that the waiting shed is sometimes used for rest by personnel of the Assam Rifles on Road Opening Patrol duty and the explosion could have been triggered off to target them.
The crowd also continued that a team of the 30th AR and 40th AR had patrolled the area on ROP duty earlier today.
Soon after getting information of the blast, Imphal East district police including Addl SP, Dy SP, SDPO and OC Porompat PS arrived at the spot to inspect the explosion site.
40th AR officers and personnel also arrived at the scene bring sniffer dogs and inspected the site.
Meanwhile, womenfolk of the area staged a sit in protest condemning the violent incident and appealed to all concerned not to repeat such violence in residential areas in the future.
