Dementia serious health issue, deem speakers at interaction programme

IMPHAL, September 9: The Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS), Imphal City, Department of Social Welfare, government of Manipur in collaboration with National Alliance for Elders People Livelihood research advocacy & chronic diseases of India; Alzheimer’s and Related Disorder’s Society of India, Manipur Chapter today organized a one day interaction programme as part of the World Alzheimer’s Month under the theme “A journey of caring” at Wahengbam Leikai Lairembi Community Hall.  

Speaking at the programme, RK Nayansana Devi, former chairperson, Manipur State Social Welfare Board said that the focus is to provide care to people with dementia.

She continued that having a globally coordinated month long awareness will send a strong message to the people on the facts that dementia is a serious health issue which will have serious implications on services and health systems.

By focusing on a different message each year, the month can be used to educate and challenge people's misconceptions about Alzheimer, she expressed.

Dr K Shantibala Devi, vice chairperson and scientific chief patron, NAEPLRA chronic diseases of India and Alzheimer’s Related Disorders Society (ARDSI) Manipur Chapter said that Alzheimer is a main health issue and social care challenges of the 21st century which usually begins after the age of 60 and the risk goes up as one gets older.

Alzheimer is a brain disorder that seriously affects a person's ability to carry out daily activities, she said.

She continued that people with Alzheimer may have trouble remembering things that happened recently or names of people they know and may not even recognize family members or have trouble speaking, reading or writing.

Later on, they may become anxious or aggressive, or wander away from home and the symptoms can get worse, she explained.

No treatment can contain the illness. However, some drugs may help keep symptoms from getting worse for a limited time, eventually, they need total care, she said.

During the observance, a poster was also released.
