Chandigarh, August 21: As part of its initiative to use energy saving lights in the city, the Chandigarh (Punjab) administration has decided to replace ordinary street lights with light emitting diodes (LED) ones in different sectors.
In the coming months, LED street lights would be installed in Sectors 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 29, 30, 31, 32, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, Dhanas, Maloya and Manimajra.
In comparison to the high pressure sodium lamp used, LED street lights can save up to 50-70 percent energy and last longer.
LED provides up to 8 times more brightness than the incandescent lamps without emissions that are also harmful to the environment.
A highly-focused LED optical system projects a regular rectangular beam pattern, that reduces glare and thus, helps vehicle drivers feel less fatigued.
This project would be extended to the entire state eventually.
