JAC formed over van driver's death, indefinite bandh imposed along Imp-Moreh highway

IMPHAL, August 19: Protests against the killing of a van driver Okram Gyanendro of Singjamei Okram Leikai continued along the Singjamei stretch of the Imphal Moreh Highway.

Meanwhile, transporters bodies have called an indefinite bandh along the NH-2 (Imphal-Moreh) from morning from 5am tomorrow until the culprit is arrested.

Protestors came out on the street at Singjamei and blocked normal traffic movement along the highway stretch by burning tyres on the road today.

All shops starting from Singjamei bazar remained closed demanding the arrest of all those involved in the killing of the driver.

A Joint Action Committee was also formed following a public meeting of locals from Singjamei to Kakwa along with local clubs.

The demonstrators also submitted a memorandum to the state Chief Minister through the local MLA I Hemochandra after taking out a protest rally starting from Singjamei Okram Leikai.

Speaking to the mediapersons, O Imoton president of the JAC said that four demands were resolved during the public meeting which was also attended by local clubs and civil society organizations of the state.

The demands will be submitted to the CM, he said.

The demands include identification of the culprits within three days-time and awarding of capital punishment to the found guilty according to the law, he said.

The meeting had further demanded the identification of the electronic device found along with the deceased and presenting the report before the general public and also resolved that the JAC will not claim the dead body of the deceased until the culprits are arrested.

The protest rally was started around noon commencing from Singjamei and proceeded towards the Chief Minister’s Bungalow to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister but were stopped from proceeding further in front of Yumnam Leikai Leirembi by a team of police.

Later on, some members of the protesting group were allowed to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the local MLA who arrived at the scene.  

On the other hand, decrying the killing of Okram Gyannedra alias Aton by unknown armed miscreants yesterday at Chandranandi road under the Wangoi police station, the Imphal Moreh Road Transporters Association (IMRTA) and the All Manipur Road Transports Drivers and Motor Workers Welfare Union (AMRTDMWU) have called an indefinite bandh along the NH-2 (Imphal-Moreh) from morning 5am tomorrow until the culprit(s) are arrested, informed H Kulamani general secretary of the AMRTDMWU during a press conference held at Moirangkhom Van Parking.

He further said the indefinite bandh along the NH-2 will be in effect from August 20 from 5am.

He further appealed and requested the entire transporter unions of the state plying on different roads to support the bandh called by the Transporters Union and the van association against the brutal killing of van driver O Gyanendro.

He also urged the state government to take up necessary actions in connection with the killing of Gyannedra and also to give compensation to the deceased's family at the earliest.

After the press conference, the transporters’ union and the van association staged a protest at Moirangkhom by blocking vehicular traffic along the NH-2 for a short period of time.
