Discussion on ‘’Border Fencing on Indo-Myanmar Border’’ held

IMPHAL, August 20: A one-day long discussion on ‘’Border Fencing on Indo-Myanmar Border’’ organised by United NGOs Mission, Manipur (UNM-M) was held today at the Banquet Hall of Hotel Imphal.
It was attended by several eminent leaders of the state and chiefs of villages which have been affected on account of border fencing works along the Indo-Myanmar border.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Dhanabir Laishtam stated that all these times when Manipur was in the highest of her power, hill and valley were one and this oneness defended Manipur against all invasions and thus, she could maintain her independence up to 1891, when the rest of India was already conquered by the British.
He further said that about 10 kms of the state’s territory is most likely to be lost due to the ongoing border fencing works along the Indo-Myanmar border adding that the state government should intervene and stop the border fencing works before a large territory of the state is lost to Myanmar.
U Nobokishore, secy UNM-M said that a report would be submitted to State Government, Government of India and Ministry of DoNER urging to stop the ongoing border fencing works along the border informing that another report highlighting violation of International Law on account of the fencing works will also be handed over to the United Nation.
A proposal will also be sent to the UN requesting to depute a fact finding team including officials of WWF and UN equipped with machines and instrument so as to properly demarcate the boundary line along the Indo-Myanmar border, he added.
