Addition of ASEAN study in NIT, Manipur on the cards

IMPHAL, August 12: The National Institute of technology, Manipur today observed its 4th Foundation Day Celebration cum Freshers’ Meet at its Takyelpat campus.
The function was attended by Minister of Education, CAF & PD, M Okendro Singh; Controller of Technical Education, Govt of Manipur, Kh Rajchandra Singh; former Vice Chancellor, Manipur University, C Amuba; Member, BOG, NIT Manipur, Kh Devabrata Singh; and Director, NIT Manipur, Dr S Birendra Singh as chief guest, guests of honour and president respectively.
Minister M Okendro Singh lighted the inaugural lamp formally inaugurating the function.
Showing concern over the problems that the students have to face due to the temporary compound of the institute, the Minister said all such problems will be resolved once the construction of the permanent complex is completed.
Apart from the regular courses, credible short term courses in export-import trade, foreign exchange management, tourism and hospitality industry, transport & logistics and sustainable industrialization of forest resources and energy management will also be introduced in the institute in preparation for the state and the region’s future engagement in connection with the Look East Policy, he announced.
Further continuing his address, the Minister said that the idea of setting up an Association of South East Asian Nations, ASEAN study centre at the institute was also discussed during the during a recent BOG meeting.
He further identified the discussion as one step forward to the dream of making Manipur and the region an economic hub capable of bringing a difference to the country’s economy.
The state government will continue to support NIT, Manipur in its entire endeavour and is confident that the institute will attract the best teaching faculties from the country and also from other countries.
Director Dr S Birendra Singh had earlier said that due to certain complexities in the admission process, admission of some students were delayed while others failed to get admission, however, the authorities will ensure that the admission process is announced well before hand so that the students had ample time for the long admission process.
Mechanical & Civil Engineering course has been opened in the institute recently, he said and further declared that the specialization in power system and electricity (Pure Electrical Engineering) will be added soon, he said.
He also said that the lack of faculty, teaching and non-teaching staff will be filled at the earliest possible.
