Security measures taken up for Union Minister’s visit

Imphal, July 21: All necessary security arrangements for the inspection visit of Union Minister of State for Defence and Youth Affairs and Sports, Jitendra Singh has been put inplace. He will be visiting the state on Sunday to inspect the condition of the National Highway – 37 (formerly NH 53). The minister will inspect the condition of the road from Nungba to Barak, but will not be travelling on the road stretch i from Barak to Jiribam as a bridge has broken down.

Ahead of the visit, a high level meeting was held on Saturday at the Conference Hall of Old Secretariat presided by Ram Muivah, Principal Secretary of Works. DGP Y Joykumar; ADGP Pachao; DC Tamenglong; officials of BRTF and BRO also attended the meeting. The meeting discussed the steps necessary to be taken up to make Union Minister’s visit a successful and safe one.

Meanwhile, a reliable source said that the Union Minister Jitendra Singh will arrive at Imphal Sunday at 10 am and he along with Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam and Works Minister Gaikhangam will go upto Nungba by Helicopter.

Meanwhile, the visit of the Union Minister will cover only from Nungba to Barak by road, as a result of which, he will return back without seeing the stretch from Barak to Jiribam, which is considered the worst problematic section of the Highway.

Truck, tanker and bus Drivers, who have been traveling on this road on daily basis, said that the section of the highway from Nungba to Barak is very bad. But the stretch from Barak to Jiribam has  many broken bridges and non-repairing of these bridges is a major cause of inconvenience.

The bridge, which was built near Nung Dalan, broke down around July 5 to 8 recently, thereby disconnecting the road. However, the bridge has been repaired on a temporary basis as of now. On the other hand, even though many bridges have been built between Makru to Jiribam, these are yet to be completed, as result of which vehicles are made to pass through by constructing by-passes.

However, these by-pass roads are in extremely bad shape, causing loaded-vehicles to get stuck in the slush. Negligence of BRO is the main reason for the non-completion of these bridges. The drivers further added that if the Defence Minister visits these stretches which are in the worst condition, he can issue strong instructions which might lead to improvement in the condition of this Highway.

It may be mentioned that the Union Minister will inspect the NH- 37 from Nungba to Barak by road and will monitor the progress of the work done by BRO. He will return from Bark to Nungba by road again, and from there, will travel to Imphal by helicopter at around 11.55 am.

At 1.55 pm, the Union Minister will meet the officials of BRO and will listen to the report of the Chief Engineer of BRO regarding the various problems and limitations faced by BRO.

After this meeting, he will visit Khuman Lampak Sports Complex at around 2.50 pm. After having a brief interaction with the officials and players there, Union Minister Jitendra Singh will leave Imphal for Bangalore at around 3.45 pm.
