Husband allegedly chops off wife’s fingers

IMPHAL, July 18: In a gruesome and rare incident reported in the state, a husband attacked his wife with a sword around 11 pm of July 17 at Salungpham Kang Yambem, Mathak Leikai under Thoubal Police station.

The man has been identified as Tolenkhomba (47), while his wife is identified as Maibam (o) Sapam (n) Thoithoi Devi (43). The accused has been reportedly 'rounded up' by the locals and handed over to the Thoubal Police.

Three fingers of the woman’s right hand were cut off during the attack. The woman who also received injuries on her right palm is presently undergoing treatment at SHija Hospital and Research Institute.

According to the daughter in law of the duo, the incident occurred late last night, when the woman was sitting at the veranda.

She told media persons at the Shija Hospital that her father in law suddenly attacked her mother in law from behind using a sword leaving the former injured.

The attack left three of her fingers dangling, she said and added that her father in law immediately fled away from the scene.

Her mother in law was rushed to the hospital at around 12:30am.

Meanwhile, a source has said that Tolenkhomba who is an SK Oil agent of Salungpham Gram Panchayat had left home in the evening following a quarrel with his wife and returned late at night in a drunken stupor.

After returning home, he went inside his house and after taking out the sword came and attacked his wife and fled from the scene, the source said.

However, locals along with parental family members of the woman nabbed Tolenkhomba from the Salungpham Khunou Water Supply, Waroiching hill  area this morning and handed him over to the Thoubal Police.
