RPF note on World Environment day

IMPHAL, June 4: The Revolutionary People’s Front has said in a press statement that June 5 has been observed as Environment Day every year to encourage awareness on the problems of the environment.

The statement continued that the environment has today deteriorated a lot. 'The race for development amongst the different countries of the world is one main reason for the deteriorating condition of the environment,' it said.

However, the deteriorating condition of the Manipur environment is not because Manipur has entered the race of development, but it is because of economical ventures of the Indian government to earn profit, the statement claimed.

It has further continued that experts have said there used to be around 500 lakes in Manipur in the past but now there are only about five lakes.

The conditions of the remaining five lakes including the Loktak Lake are also deteriorating, it said.

The release has further said that according to the “Reserve Forest, Government of Manipur, 1997”, there are 53 Reserve Forest and there are two National Park and Wild Life sanctuary, it said before adding that this are all only on paper and not visible to the people.
