“No plans as of now to provide jobs to Mt Everest summiteers”

IMPHAL, June 26: The government has no plans to provide the Mount Everest summiteers with jobs as provided to sport-players of other disciplines. But discussion will be held to see what can be done, said Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh who is also in charge of Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS) while replying to a question raised by MLA K Sharat Singh of Konthoujam Constituency.
The Chief Minister further said that based on the state sports policy, the Manipur government has been providing grade III and grade IV jobs to sportspersons for their achievements in separate sports disciplines.
Process of employment exchange does not cover provision of jobs to them. Employment quota reserved for them by the Manipur government is 5% and the reserved job quota for sportspersons is in 42 disciplines, of which Mountaneering and Adventure Sports is one, he informed.
In the past, mountaineer G Anita Devi had been provided a class I government job for her performance whereas the recent Mount Everest summiteers have been felicitated with a cash prize of Rs 10 lakhs each, he pointed out before adding that their team leader also was given a cash prize of Rs 2 lakhs.
He said that it will be considered whether suitable government jobs can be provided to them.
Answering to another question raised by MLA O Lukhoi Singh of Wangoi constituency, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh said that a proposal to open a nationalised bank State bank of India at Wangoi sub-divisional headquarters had been submitted in 2012. The exact date on which a branch of the bank is to be opened will be intimated to the Manipur government, he added.
Responding to a question put by MLA Th Biswajit Singh, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh who is also in charge of MAHUD said that work order for construction of Singjamei Market portion– I was issued and the work is set to be completed on June 13, 2014.
PDA has finished constructing a temporary market shed to serve as a market while the market shed is under construction, said Chief Minister on the floor of the House.
