Imphal, May 2: Two remote controlled IEDs each weighing 6.5 kg were destroyed in situ by the bomb disposal squad at 9 am yesterday. The IEDs were recovered by 16 Assam Rifles of 10 Sector Assam Rifles near Seijang along NH-202 around 6.30 pm on April 30.
According to a statement issued by PRO IGAR (S), acting on a hard intelligence received from own sources, a party from YKPI COB was launched on 30 Apr 13. The party saw two individuals moving in suspicious manner near Seijang at about 0630 PM. The party challenged the individuals who tried to flee the site. However, the individuals were caught. The search of the area led to recovery of a blue bag which contained the IEDs. The area was cordoned off during the night. The IEDs were diffused by a bomb disposal squad in morning on 01 May 13. The individuals were identified as R K Mangisan aged 47 years and H Hemanta aged 33 years both resident of Sabungkhok Mayal Leikai of Imphal East district.
Meanwhile, villagers and Meira Paibis gathered outside the YKPI COB to get the individuals released. Assam Rifles' officers interacted with the villagers and apprised them of the real situation. The locals left the COB satisfied when they were informed that the individuals had confessed to their crime.
It has been revealed that the IED was placed to specifically target the security forces. The precise operation clubbed with hard intelligence is a setback to the terrorist outfits that have now resorted to target security forces hiding instead of confronting face to face. The terrorist outfits have also been targeting innocent civilians and official whom they have served extortion notes and threats. The spurt in IED incidents are a clear indicator of lack of motivation or cause of the terrorist outfits who have now been subdued by the persistent operations by Assam Rifles. It is noteworthy that IGAR (South) has achieved a major breakthrough in bringing several terrorist outfits under peace process. This cowardly act is a lame attempt by terrorist outfits to derail the peace process and ensuing peace in the state of Manipur. However, the last ditch effort to keep the terrorism alive in Manipur will be fought with tenacity by the Assam Rifles.
The IED recovery came on the heels of the firing incident on Mr M K Preshow, MLA Chingai at 3pm on 30 Apr 13 near Ukhrul. The jittery firer shot two rounds aimlessly and ran away from the site due to the domination of Assam Rifles in the area.
