Locals decry sisters’ arrest; negate police charges

IMPHAL, April 1: Local Meira Paibis of Arong Khunou Awang Leikai, Kakching Police Station under Thoubal district alleged that Hinyanglam Police commandos had arrested two sisters Wahengbam (o) Ningthoujam Pramodini (35) and her younger sister Ninthoujam Manimacha (30) daughters of N Ibocha of the locality on charges of being PREPAK (Pro) cadres on March 23 evening around 3 pm.
Negating all charges of the sisters being cadres of armed outfits, the local meira paibis called a press conference today at the Manipur Press Club and further alleged that the two sisters were picked up from two different locations by Hiyanglam Police commandos.
The meira paibis maintained that the two sisters are not cadres of the PREPAK (Pro) as claimed by the police and has further asked the concerned outfit to clarify on the issue at the earliest.
The meira paibis also pointed out that the commando teams were not accompanied by woman police personnel during the arrest of the two sisters.
The spokesperson of the local meira paibi said the younger of the two, Manimacha was arrested along with one Shyamsunder on March 23 evening from a place about 2km away from her house. However, Shyamsunder who is a VDF personnel was released the same day around 10 pm , she maintained.
The team that arrested the two were in civil dress, she continued, adding further that no arrest memo was given with regard to the arrest of the two women siblings.
