Farmer Fair 2013 starts


IMPHAL, April 9: A one day “Farmer Fair 2013” was inaugurated today by the Minister of Agriculture Mohammed Abdul Nasir, today organized by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) North East Hill Region held at ICAR, Research Complex, Manipur Centre, Lamphelpat, under the Horticulture Mission (MM I), National Initiative on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) and Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP).

Speaking at the function Mohammed Abdul Nasir congratulated ICAR for its hard work and contribution for a holistic development to the agriculture sector in Manipur.

He emphasized on the need to increase the productivity of different crops and expressed that ICAR and agriculture department should join hands in an integrated way for the farming community to increase productivity.

The farmer should concentrate on Rabi crop (winter session crop) so as reduce spoiling of their crops because during this session water scarcity is high, he said.

Dr M Premjit Singh, explained the changing climatic scenario and presented a brief account of different technologies to combat the impact of global warming. He elaborated that in the state, agriculture occupies 70% of means of livelihood and it’s time to provide trainings to the farmers to increase their productivity. He appealed the farmers to take advantage of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) scientist and to use technologies to solve water problem for the Rabi crops.

Dr. N. Prakash, Joint Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre in his presidential address briefly explained the different activities undertaken by ICAR for the benefit of farmers under Horticulture Mission (MM I), National Initiative on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA), Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) and National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP). He elaborated on the need to conduct more demonstration program at farmers' field for ensuring the livelihood and food security.

Meanwhile in a goof-up, the ribbon cutting and the distribution of rabi crops, poultry chicks had to be performed twice. Owing to an information that Minister Mohammed Abdul Nasir will not be attending the function, the ribbons had been cut by Dr M Premjit Singh and the poultry chicks already distributed when the Minister suddenly arrived. The organized collected the previously distributed poultry chicks and put the ribbons back for the Minister to cut the ribbon and redistribute the poultry chicks.The seeds of rice, maize, pigeon pea, black gram, seasonal vegetables and poultry chicks were distributed to the participating farmers during the function.

Books on "Developing the Potential of Underutilized Horticultural Crops of Hill Regions" and "Principles and Concepts of Organic Farming" published by ICAR were also released by the guest of honour and chief guest, respectively.
