Civil societies condemn “murder”


IMPHAL, April 7: Protests and condemnations are continuing over the brutal murder of JRF Satyabhama whose charred body was found at Bashikhong on April 5. In a press release, the Women Action for Development (WAD) expressed profound grief over the incident. The release also denounced the rape and muder of a 16 year old girl at Haorang canal under Lamshang Police Station on 4th March 2013 as also the rape of a 13 year old student of Kendra Vidyalaya School by a  teacher named Rajesh Kumar from Haryana at Ukhrul. "The cases of infanticide are also rising as proved by the abandonment of a murdered 15 day old infant at Ngairangbam Khalong Loukoi under Patsoi Police Station and with 4 cases of infant abandonment being reported till date for 2013, it said.

Appreciating the Home department for instituting a Special Investigating Team (SIT) for investigating into the murder case of Satyabhama, the statement from WAD expressed its hope that the said team would solve the case without any bias and deliver justice at the quickest pace. WAD also appealed to seek support from the Central Criminal Investigation Agency for quick dealing with this case.

The People’s Action for National Democratic Movement (PANDM) has expressed its condolence for the death of N Satyabhama Devi of Kakwa Selungba Leikai who was brutally murdered according to a press release. "Such an incidentwould not be the last one to happen as the government has not awarded befitting punishment to the culprits of crimes against women," it said and added that for the security of womenfolk, the government should arrest and give the severe punishment to the murderers of Satyabhama, or else it would be responsible for such cases in the future.

A public meeting on the brutal murder of N Satyabhama (Penao) Devi of Kakwa Laishram Selungba Leikai was also conducted at the office of the Eastern Students’Club (ESC) at Nongmeibung attended by the club, representatives of the Nongmeibung Womens' Development Meira Paibi Association, Councillor of W/No 21 and Ward Members. The statement from ESU said that a two minutes silence was observed at the meeting for the peace of the departed soul. The meeting also expressed condemnation of the brutal murder.  It also pointed out two local newspaper reports that had mentioned two names of contractors and asked to provide the surname, name of father and mother and age of the twho who are supposed to be from the Nongmeibung area. Maintaining that the people of Nongmeibung will cooperate with the decision of the public if indeed the accused are from Nongmeibung, it appealed to the media not to publish the name of the Leikai without properly establishing  facts.

Meanwhile,  a statement of the Kangleipak Lamjing Apunba Meiralup (KANGLAMEI) said it took the murder of Satyabhama seriously and condemned it. The government should arrest the culprit and award befitting punishment to stop such crime in future, it went on to add.
