Repeal AFSPA campaign held


IMPHAL, November 4: As part of its five day repeal AFSPA campaign, the Just Peace Foundation alongwith the Organisation for Development, Santhel and Youth Parallel Mind Group, Santhel organised the campaign at Santhel Mamang Government Junior High Madrassa, Wabagai under Thoubal district today.

Speaking as resource person, S Rojesh of Delhi School of Economics stressed on what AFSPA is, its provisions and its effect on people.

The Act is the most dangerous one in the world, he said.

It is like the one formed by Nazis to eliminate Jews during World War II, the Ph D student said before adding that it is more dangerous than the British law during their rule in India.

Further elaborating he said under this Act any suspicious person can be killed by a non commissioned officer, which is against Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.

He further said that POTA was removed as it was implemented nationwide whereas AFSPA is still functioning as it is implemented only in NE and Kashmir. The matter would have been discussed already if Irom Sharmila was born in any other parts of India, he said.

The presidium members present at the campaign include Md Basiruddin and Md Latif, teachers of The Santhel Mamang Government Junior High Madrassa; Md Asad Ali, Ex-Pradhan of Wabagai A/C; and Md Rahimuddin, Social Worker.
