PM arrives in Phnom Penh to attend ASEAN and East Asia Summits

Phnom Penh, Nov 18: With an agenda to push for greater trade relations in the South East Asian region, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh arrived in the Cambodian capital on Sunday to attend the ASEAN and East Asia Summits.
The two summit meets will provide an opportunity for India to enhance its economic cooperation with the region amid lingering financial crisis in the western world.
India is soon likely to finalise an agreement for boosting trade in investment and services in the region.
Dr. Singh on Sunday met the premier of Singapore and President of Philippines.
Prime Minister will meet the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday morning and discuss the trade related issues with him.
He will also be meeting other world leaders on the sidelines of ASEAN and East Asia Summits.
However, his bilateral meeting with newly re-elected US President Barack Obama may not happen as Obama will be in Myanmar on Monday on his first visit to the country.
Dr Singh is expected to pitch for increased trade and investment between India and ASEAN.
The grouping of 10 South East Asian countries is an important trading partner especially after the economic crisis hitting Europe and parts of the western world.
The 21st Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit opened in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh on Sunday, bringing together leaders from 10 ASEAN member countries.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, the rotating chair of ASEAN this year, presided over the summit under the theme "One Community, One Destiny".
The summit is expected to tackle issues including ASEAN Community building, maintaining regional peace and security as well as strengthening cooperation between the bloc and its partners.
