DMK decides to support govt on FDI in multi brand retail issue

New Delhi, Nov 27: The UPA government today got further relief with its ally DMK deciding to support the government on the FDI in retail issue.

In a dramatic twist, the DMK party, a crucial ally of the UPA announced that it would support the government on the FDI in retail sector.

Party Chief Karunanidhi in a statement issued in Chennai said despite differences on the issue, the party has decided to back the UPA Government to save it from being dislodged.

He said the decision had been taken after considering the centre's assurance that FDI in retail sector will not be forced on states, following which there is no danger to small traders and farmers in Tamil Nadu.

Justifying the decision to support government on the issue, Karunanidhi said if there is voting in Parliament under rule 184, there is a possible threat to the UPA Government and this could benefit the BJP.

He said the decision to go with the government had been taken to ensure that communal forces do not take centre stage.

He also charged the BJP of spreading canards about 2G Spectrum alleging that there was a revenue of loss of one lakh seventy six thousand crore rupees to the exchequer.

Earlier, SP, BSP and Trinamool Congress have said they will not insist on voting on the debate on FDI in retail issue.

However, BJP and Left parties are still adamant on discussion with voting provisions.
