43rd International Film Festival opens in Goa


Panaji, Nov 20: Popular cine actor Akshay Kumar inaugurates the cinematic extravaganza that will also showcase 100 years of Indian cinema at the 43rd edition of International Film Festival of India got off Tuesday evening in Goa.

Information and Broadcasting Minister, Manish Tewari, Goa Governor, B V Wanchoo, chief Minister Manohar Parikkar, I & B Secretary, Uday Kumar Varma and actor Akshay Kumar jointly lighted the lamp and inaugurated the ten day long festival.

The festival is celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema with a special centenary package this year which will feature 27 films, 36 documentaries covering all the eras of cinema from silent to black and white, to coloured.
The inaugural ceremony showcased all the exciting cinematic moments, depicted wonderfully through dance and music.

The celebrated Polish film-maker Krzysztof Zanussi was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award and a cash prize of ten lakh rupees.

While the IFFI opened with the 3D movie, Life of Pi, directed by Oscar winner Ang Lee , the closing film is Mira Nair's movie "the Reluctant Fundamentalist", which is based on Pakistani writer Mohsin Hamid's book.

For the Indian Panorama, 18 films each from the feature and non-feature categories have been selected.

Beach screening of the movies during IFFI, was introduced in 2004 when festival travelled to Goa but it was discontinued later. The festival organisers are restarting it this year.

Manoj Srivastava, Chief Executive Officer of Entertainment Society of Goa, organiser of the festival, told reporters that the beach screenings would be held between 24th to 28th November.

"Films would be screened on a huge screen that is installed on the beaches. The screenings are free," Srivastava said.

More than 10,000 people expected to turn up, said Srivastava, adding that they have identified 10 places for the screenings.

The festival is also planning to organise concerts on the beaches.
