New record in speedy cataract operation

IMPHAL, October 6: For the first time in the history of Manipur, a total of 82 cataract patients were operated successfully to regain their vision in one particular working day.
This happened during the free cataract detection camp a joint initiative of Shija Eye care foundation , a unit of Shija health care and researh institute, Langol and District Blindness Control Society, Thoubal at PHC Lilong PHC on 29 September.
A total of 599 patients turned up for the camp, out of which 292 cataract cases were detected on the spot.
Following the camp, two free cataract surgery have been organised at Shija Eye Care Foundation, Langol.
Cataract operations in a single day wherein 82 cataract patientss availed of the free treatment facility on 3-10-2012.
The second camp was held om 5-10-2012 where in 43 cataract patients were operated free of cost.
During an interview, Dr KH Palin, chairman cum director Shija Hospital expressed his heartiest gratitude to the state programme office, Manipur state blindness control society, Dr Ch Renubala, dstrict programme manager, DBCS, Thoubal L Munal, N Sunil and the entire team of DBCS for extending their kind support and making this mega free cataract surgery camp a grand success. He also applauded Dr Sachindra Laishram, consultant opthalmologist and the entire team of Shija eye care foundation for the altruistic contribution.
According to Dr Palin, about 2 lakhs of the entire population of Manipur is estimated to be suffering with cataract and this number is going to be escalated in due course of time.
He further mentioned that RSBY smart card holders can now avail of free treatment facilities in the departments of Eye, ENT, General Surgery, Urology, Dental and endoscopic procedures at Shija hospitals and Shija Eye Care Foundation will continuously participate in all the blindness control programme initiated under the National Programme for control of blindness.
