State Govt urge Union Law Minister to depute 5 judges


IMPHAL, September 2: The Union Law Minister, Salman Khursid has intimated the State Government whether three judges from Manipur will be adequate for handling the legal proceedings of the Manipur High Court.

The matter was discussed at a cabinet meeting some time back and after deliberation replied the Union Minister to induct at least 5 judges at the minimum. The decision from the ministry in the regard is still pending at present.

It may be mentioned that there are already two Manipuri Justices at the Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench, namely Tayenjam Nandakumar and Nongmeikapam Koteshwor .

The High Court Bar Association members on June 10 last had initiated a cease work strike to urge the concerned for deputing at least 7 judges for the upcoming Manipur High Court. Afterwards, HCBA also met the Union Law Minister on July 4 with help of MP of Inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency, Dr T Meinya   and submitted a memorandum.

Recently, the concerned Minister had intimated the State authorities in writing whether three judges will be sufficient for the workings of the said Court.
