India condemns attack on US consulate in Libya

New Delhi: India Wednesday strongly condemned the attack on the US consulate in Libya that killed Washington's envoy and other US officials.

"We are deeply shocked at the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi," the external affairs ministry said here.

"India strongly condemns the violent acts which unfortunately resulted in the death of the US ambassador to Libya and other officials," it said.

Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai spoke to US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell and conveyed India's condolences at the tragic loss of life.

US Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens and three of his staff were killed as an armed mob apparently incensed over a US-made film critical of Islam attacked the American consulate in Benghazi.
