Syrian fighter jet downed, crew captured: RebelsDamascus (agencies): A Syrian fighter jet on Monday crashed in al-Muhassan near the Iraqi border, according to a BBC report.

Conflicting claims were made by the Syrian government and the rebels after reports of the fighter jet crashing came to light.

The state media claimed that the fighter jet was on a routine training mission and crashed due to technical problems.

A fault with its control mechanism forced the pilot to abandon the aircraft. Search is on for the missing pilot.

However, the rebels claim that the jet was shot down by them in the town of al-Muhassan near the Iraqi border. They further claimed that one crew died in the crash and the other one has been captured.
