Alleged militant killed in Baruni “shootout”

IMPHAL, August 29: Post the encounter episode at Haraothel Kuki village yesterday where a militant was gunned down by the Imphal West police and the identity of the deceased yet to be ascertained, the Imphal East police commandos today gunned down another UG suspect.
The incident took place at around 5:15 pm at a place which is about 200 meters south of Eco-park located near Baruni Chingkong, Lafupokpi.
According to a tip off police learnt that some heavily armed underground cadres were present at the site.
A team of Imphal East police commandos went to the spot and were fired upon from a hillock near the said area.
The commandos also took position and retaliated, there was exchange of firing for some time. After some time, police personnel scoured the site and found a body bearing bullet marks.
The identity of the slain person could not be identified till the filing of this report and there have been no claims from any outfits.
The individual is thin built and about 5 feet in height and looks to be in his early thirties.
He was attired in black pants and camouflage boots and a crimson coloured face mask. There was no shirt on his body.
The corpse is kept at JNIMS morgue for post mortem and identification.
Meanwhile, a search operation conducted at the site by police recovered one handgrenade, one 9mm pistol, local made bombs, five detonators, an iron bucket and a mineral water bottle with some clothes.
