No prior information on Salam Joy arrest: Gaikhangam

IMPHAL, October 9: Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, who also holds the Home portfolio, informed that the government had no prior information with regard to the arrest of former Wangoi MLA Salam Joy, by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Talking to IFP in this regard at his office chamber at Old Secretariat in Babupara, Gaikhangam divulged that the state government came to know about the arrest of Salam Joy only when the NIA faxed the state police to convey the report of Salam Joy’s arrest to his family.
The NIA gave a summon through the state police asking Salam Joy to appear before the NIA court Guwahati, added Gaikhangam.
When asked about the cases registered against Joy, Gaikhangam further clarified that there are no official information available with the state but he asserted that NIA no doubt can corroborate for their intention.
Ex-MLA Salam Joy (44), son of late S. Das Singh of Samurou Awang was elected in the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly as a NCP candidate.
Sources said that he was arrested for having nexus with a faction of the Kangleipak Communist Party. In this connection, he was summoned by the NIA based at Guwahati to appear before them. Salam Joy then reached Gauhati on October 2.
The following day, he went to the NIA special court and was formally arrested later by the concerned authorities at around 2 pm. The case registered against him was filed earlier and bore NIA case number RC-03/2011/NIA/ GHY.
The same day i.e on October 3, he was produced before the Special Court of NIA and was further remanded into their custody till October 9, 2013.
