Ningol Chakkouba Festive Fair begins

IMPHAL, October 28: The Ningol Chakkouba Festive Fair, 2013, an exclusive fair of the clusters of weavers’ society from Imphal West, was inaugurated today at the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, by O Nabakishore Singh, IAS principal secretary commerce and Industries, who attended the function as chief guest.

The inaugural function was also attended by V Tualthang, additional Director, Commerce and Industries, and M Rajen, Project Manager District Handlooms and Textiles Imphal West, as president and guest of honour.

In his chief guest speech Nabakishore, while noting marketing as the backbone to ensure increased production of handloom products, exhorted the weavers reap the benefits of various schemes implemented sponsored by state and central government.

He revealed that Myanmar has invited Manipur to take part in an international level handloom fair at Mandalay and the same is under active consideration with the department concerned.

While referring to the common trend of producing women clothing, Nabakishore suggested the weavers not to limit their production list in order to make a mark in the international level.

V Tualthang, observed that the quantity and quality of production of handloom products have improved tremendously while urging weavers to extend their full co-operation to further boost the handloom trade.

He further informed that the department will organised similar fair at a larger edition accommodating weavers from different districts.

Altogether 82 stalls took part in the fair displaying colourful traditional attire of different communities of the state.
