MLA calls for conserted effort to safeguard endangered birds, animals

IMPHAL, October 4: Along with celebrating its 2nd Foundation Day, the People for Animals, Thoubal observed the ‘’World Animal Day’’ today at the hall of Table Tennis Association Thoubal district.

The function was attended by Kakching MLA Y Surchandra as chief guest; Conservator o Forest, Forest Dept Manipur K Shyam as president; Joint Director District Veterinary Office, Thoubal L Dillipkumar and DSP (Ops) Thoubal District Police Y Chandramani as guests of honour.

Chairperson PFA Thoubal AK Prem was also present as presidium member.

Delivering key note address, Managing Trustee PFA Thoubal L Bishwajit stated that the PFA Thoubal was formed on October 4, 2011 by members who have soft corner for birds and animals and wants to save and take care of them adding that the trust is not only for Thoubal district but is for Manipur as a whole.

He further said the goal of PFA Thoubal is to save animals which are in danger, cure them and to release them to safer places noting that the PFA Thoubal is a registered body of Indian Trust Act, 1982 and is affiliated to Central Zoo Authority of India.

In the current year, the PFA Thoubal has saved 36 Tokay Gecko, various 74 birds, ten Slow Lories, seven Turtles, five snakes and two Pythons. It has also handed over seven hunters to police and clamped them with fine, he informed.

“We have been urging the Minsiters and MLAs to look after the lack of infrastructure and other facilities being faced by the PFA Thoubal. But till now, there has been not any positive response given,” he rued.

MLA Y Surchandra said that local birds like Nongin, Langmeidong and Wahong are now seen rarely and contending that law and security cannot curb the menace of eating and killing birds and animals. "Instead, there is a need of concerted effort from the people," he pointed out.

Later, in connection with the Animal Day, certificates signed by noted animal rights activist Menaka Gandhi were presented to 25 persons including 19 officers from three departments of State Police Dept and three Forest Guards of KLNP for their outstanding contribution in saving animals.

Moiranthem Priyobarta of Khongjom and Malemnganbi Khaidem of Kakwa were also honoured with the 'Animal Lover of the Year' Award.
