State girl’s cycle crusade against VAW completes 20 days

JIRIBAM, September 9: 17 year old Sougaijam Bidyalakshmi Leima, a resident of Lakhipur under Jiribam sub-division in Imphal East District who is on a cycle tour that will cover all the North Eastern states carrying the message ‘’Stop Violence Against Women’’  reached Sonitpur District in Assam today.

With this, she has completed 20 days of her tour and already passed through six villages of Sonitpur district.

Bidyalakshmi, whose cycling tour was flagged off from Imphal on August 21 was warmly welcomed and received by the people of Sonitpur while recognizing her endeavor. Local NGOs, clubs and CSOs had come out together to receive her.

She passed through Jakhalabandha, Nagaon district, Kalia Bhomora Bridge and then Tezpur town before reaching Sonitpur district. Afterwards, she took rest at Dasumati Hotel in Biswanath Chariraly where Manik Bor Mudoi, Asst Sub Inspector escorted and assisted her.

It is learnt that in her last part of her Assam leg of the tour, she would ride up to Badhuduwa in Lakhimpur district from where she would head towards for Arunachal Pradesh.

It may be mentioned that Bidyalakshmi had initiated her cycling tour in protest against the rampant rise in crime and violence against women aiming to cover 82 districts in the seven north eastern states.
