President gives his assent to National Food Security Bill

New Delhi, September 13: President Pranab Mukherjee has given his assent to the National Food Security Bill- 2013, the Bill was passed by Parliament in the recently concluded Monsoon session.
The Bill seeks to provide highly subsidized foodgrains to the country's two-third population.
It will guarantee 5 kilogram of rice, wheat and coarse cereals per month per person at the rate of 1 to 3 rupees per kilogram.
With President's assent, India has now joined the select league of nations that guarantee food grains to its majority of population.
The food security programme will be the largest in the world.
Union cabinet on Thursday decided to double the allocation for BPL families at BPL prices and would release 50 lakh ton food grains to states.
In a major move to arrest the declining rupee cabinet also cleared 4.3 billion dollar bond buying program from International bank for reconstruction and Development.
